Background: Near the oil-wells of Hassi R'Mel - between Laghouat and Ghardais - in the French Sahara Visnews recently filmed manoeuvres of French airborne troops under General Challe.

During the exercise 40 jeeps, 4 trailers, 6 recoilless 10.6-cm guns, 3 12-cm mortars and other material and personnel were dropped by 29 Nord-2501 transport planes.

Hassi M'Rel is the third important oil field in the Sahara. Oil was struck here only last month. A sum of GBP97M. has been allotted by the French Government for the development of Sahara oil schemes.
