Estaba had held the title since September 1975, and had been a hot favourite to win the fight. It was Castillo's first shot at a world title, and according to Reuters it was his 26th inside-the-distance win. In all, he is said to have won 29 fights and lost only four.

Background: Boxing.....and Freddy Castillo of Mexico is the World Boxing Council's new junior flyweight champion. In the Venezuela capital of Caracas on Sunday (19 February) he met veteran champion Luis Lumumba Estaba of Venezuela, and stopped him in the 14th of their scheduled 15-round title fight.

SYNOPSIS: Round 12, and Castillo in the dark trunks was beginning to get on top. The champion was under a lot of pressure and after a jolting right had wobbled him, a vicious left sent him to the canvas.

Estaba was on his feet at four, but they were strength-sapping punches, and the title was beginning to slip away from the champion.

In the early stages Estaba, who is rumoured to be over 40, jabbed and moved and tried to dictate from long range, but the 22-year-old Castillo kept coming forward. The Mexican was strong and confident and drove Estaba back onto the ropes with a barrage of lefts and rights.

Estaba, in his 12th defence of his title, tried to get away from the ropes, but Castillo was too strong.

Into the 14th round Castillo was still driving forward, and a fierce right-left combination sent Estaba through the ropes. He clambered back, but the end was in sight.

Referee Jay Edson allowed the champion to continue, but he was soon sent toppling again.

It was all over. Freddy Castillo is the new world champion.
