  • Description

TRANSCRIPT: INTERVIEWER: NOW, IN THIS LONG TALK YOU HAD WITH MR KHRUSHCHEV - WHO CAME OFF BEST IN THE ARGUMENT?

THOMSON: WELL, YOU KNOW, I WOULD IMAGINE HE DID.

INTERVIEWER: WHAT DID YOU THINK OF HIM?

THOMSON: I WAS TREMENDOUSLY IMPRESSED WITH HIM.HE SPOKE VERY FRANKLY. I DON'T SUPPOSE HE TOLD ME EVERYTHING, NO MORE THAN I TOLD HIM EVERYTHING I WAS THINKING.BUT HE CERTAINLY DIDN'T DODGE THE QUESTIONS. HE GAVE ME AN ANSWER. SOME OF THEM, OF COURSE, WEREN'T TO MY LIKING, BUT HE WAS VERY OPEN ABOUT EVERYTHING.

INTERVIEWER: WHAT ABOUT THE TELLING POINTS HE MAE? IT SEEMED - READING WHAT HE SAID - THE POINT HE MADE ABOUT CHINA AND RUSSIA NEVER FALLING APART.

THOMSON: HE WAS SERIOUS ABOUT THAT - THERE'S NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. WHEN WE TALKED ABOUT THAT I MENTIONED THAT ONE OF THESE DAYS WE WOULD BE TOGETHER AGAINST CHINA. WELL, HE IMMEDIATELY HARDENED UP, AND OBVIOUSLY HE WASN'T GOING TO FOOL ABOUT THE SUBJECT. AND HE MADE IT VERY CLEAR THAT CHINESE PEOPLE AND THE RUSSIAN PEOPLE WOULD ALWAYS BE TOGETHER.

INTERVIEWER: DO YOU THINK THIS WEEKEND VISIT OF YOURS WILL LEAD TO A RECIPROCAL VISIT BY RUSSIAN BUSINESSMEN?

THOMSON: AT THE FAREWELL MEETING, I SUGGESTED THAT IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE A RECIPROCAL VISIT. OF COURSE,I DIDN'T GET THAT REQUEST FROM HIGH OFFICIAL, SO NO-ONE COULD GIVE ME AN ANSWER. BUT I HOPE THAT IT MIGHT BE POSSIBLE TO WORK ON.

INTERVIEWER: MR THOMSON, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

INTERVIEWER: WHAT IS GUY BURGESS DOING NOW?

    STRAIGHT: I DON'T REALLY KNOW.

INTERVIEWER: WAS THERE SOME SUGGESTION THAT HE WAS EDITING SOME KIND OF MAGAZINE AT ONE TIME?

STRAIGHT: HE DIDN'T ACTUALLY TELL ME, AND I DIDN'T ASK HIM.

INTERVIEWER: WHAT ARE HIS VIEWS ON A POSSIBLE RETURN TO ENGLAND.YOU MUST HAVE ASKED HIM THAT?

STRAIGHT: I AM AFRAID I DIDN'T ASK HIM THAT QUESTION. THAT, OF COURSE, IS AN OBVIOUS ONE AND I DIDN'T WANT TO EMBARRASS HIM BY ASKING IT.

INTERVIEWER: WHAT DID YOU TALK ABOUT?

STRAIGHT: WE TALKED ABOUT CAMBRIDGE (UNIVERSITY) AND ABOUT LIFE IN GENERAL AND DOMESTIC THINGS IN MOSCOW, AND SO ON AND SO ON...

INTERVIEWER: DID YOU GATHER HE WAS QUITE HAPPY WITH HIS LOT THERE AFTER 12 YEARS?

STRAIGHT: I THOUGHT HE SEEMED VERY HAPPY, YES.

INTERVIEWER: HAS HE GOT A LOT OF RUSSIAN FRIENDS?

STRAIGHT: SO HE SAYS. I DIDN'T MEET ANY.
