TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 3: SOF EXTRACT - MACMILLAN:

"It would be foolish, of course, to underrate or to criticize the immense strain and pressure under which the world lives today. It would be wrong to shut one's eyes to the dangers, and yet I feel that somehow we shall find a way through this jungle in the future, as we have done in the past. And in the march of mankind, as the caravan moves forward to its goal, I still believe the leadership and experience of the Commonwealth as a whole, and of the nations in it, who share our traditions, perhaps you'll let me say of the Old Country herself, I still believe, have a major part to play.....

Background: UK Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, on the eve of his departure for Britain, told 650 members of the Canadian Club in Ottawa, April 11, that Britain and the Commonwealth still had a major role to play in the leadership of the world.

Mr. Macmillan - in Ottawa for two days of talks with Canadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker - was making his only public speech during his visit. He dealt not with his talks with Mr Diefenbaker, and, earlier, with President Kennedy, but on Britain's historical role and the lessons to learn from it.

He concluded that Britain whose wealth and power of the 19th century had now diminished, would find its way through the "jungle" in the future - as it had done in the past.
