Background: With the sounds of artillery fire echoing from the Golan Heights, thousands of people lined Damascus streets yesterday (April 17) to mark the 28th anniversary of the French withdrawal from Syria.
In a message to his people on the eve of the anniversary President Assad promised the fight against Israel would go on in the same spirit shown by the Syrians 28 years ago.
President Assad has just returned from a trip to Moscow where it is though the received promises of more arms for the fight against Israel.
War fever was high as hundreds of people marched through Damascus. They carried pictures of President Assad and bands played national music. All Government offices were closed for the day and buildings decorated with flags.
France's mandate in Syria ended in 1946 after more than a quarter of a century.
