Background: INTRODUCTION: Tennis -- and American John McEnroe has beaten Bjorn Borg in the final match of the Benson and Hedges Gold Challenge in Australia. McEnroe won the match by a score of 6-4, 1-6, 7-6, 6-4, but Borg, having won the two previous matches, took the series and the title.
SYNOPSIS: McEnroe, serving here, took some time to settle down at the start of the final match in Melbourne on Saturday (21 February).
But it wasn't long before he began to play his strokes crisply and confidently.
In the earlier matches in Sydney, McEnroe had been soundly beaten by the Swede. This time it was different.
McEnroe's 6-4 win in the first set came after breaking Borg's serve in the third game.
It was a different story in the second set, with a clear victory for Borg. But the turning point of the match came in the third set, which ended with a tie-break. It lasted for 40 minutes, and went with the service until the fifth game.
McEnroe served to win the tie-break at 6-1, but Borg saved the point.
Then he served an ace, to go two-one up in the match.
Play was held up for three hours by torrential rain which drenched the centre court -- but it didn't affect McEnroe's play.
Another ace to emphasise his command of the proceedings. then match point.
Afterwards, the 22-year old McEnroe said he felt a 'little better' now that he'd beaten Borg. But it was Borg who received the golden racquet.
