Background: Organisation of American States delegates and their wives took a day off from the business of the organisation's first General Assembly and spent the day in the country as the guests of Costa Rican President and Mrs Jose Figueres on Sunday. A large number of visiting guests from all over Latin American, the United States and Europe also attended the informal get-together bringing the total number of guests to about 1,000 people. They spent most of the Sunday at one of Costa Rica's popular catering places, Ajo de Agus, known for its resemblance to a giant Cyclop's eye. Water surging from a hillside spring at a rate of 6,000 gallons a minute feeds a series of swimming pools, and artificial lake and even provides fresh water for the Pacific Coast of Puntaranas.
Entertainment at the outdoor 'Fiesta' with half a dozen musical groups ranging from hard rock music to latin American tunes. The entertainment was spiced with some traditional Mexican folk dances provided by amateur groups. Refreshments were served throughout the day, about 60 security police provided guards for the distinguished guests who included Secretary General Gale Fisan and 16 foreign ministers. U.S. Undersecretary for State for Latin America affairs Charles Eyer failed to attend.
