Background: Many cheers and jeers came from a highly amused crowd, May 23 as the ancient local custom of publicly weighing the town mayor and Corporation - performed annually - was carried out at High Wycombe, U.K.
The Mayor was weighed in to the traditional accompaniment of "God Save the Queen" and the ringing of a bell by the Town Crier. He tipped the scales at 13 stone, 2 lbs, into the chair then went the Lady Mayoress - she weighed 10 stone, 10 lbs. The local member of Parliament was also weighed.
A great ovation was accorded those who had lost weight during their term of office, an indication that they had worked hard on town affairs!
