Background: More than a hundred paintings of the outstanding Soviet painter, traveller and author, Nikolai Roerich, have been collected from exhibitions all over the Soviet Union and assembled for a special display in Moscow this month.
Nikolai Roerich was among the first Europeans not only to reach previously inaccessible regions of Central Asia, but also to celebrate the charm and grandeur of these remote areas in this paintings.
The paintings reflect his sincere admiration and extensive knowledge of the Eastern World, and many of his themes are derived from Eastern tales and legends.
SYNOPSIS: The people of Moscow are currently being treated to an exhibition of the paintings of the famous Soviet artist and author, Nikolai Roerich.
In addition to his talent as a painter, Roerich was also a great traveller, and was among the first Europeans to reach the previously inaccessible regions of central Asia. Many of the paintings, which have been brought to Moscow from collections all over the Soviet Union, derive their themes from oriental legend.
Others are straightforward scenic pieces. But in all of them, Roerich portrayed the charms and grandeur that so attracted him to the mountainous eastern hinterland.
