Background: A United Nations mission is preparing a report on Zambia's reparations claim against Rhodesia. Zambia is claiming the cost of repairing road and rail bridges up in raids by Rhodesian forces.

SYNOPSIS: The U.N. mission arrived in Lusaka on Tuesday (11 December) for talks with the Zambian government. It heard claims from Zambia's Foreign Minister, Wilson Chakulya, that vital imports were being held up because of the destruction of 12 bridges. Headed by Mr. P.R. Aasen of Norway, the mission was sent by the U.N. Security Council after Zambia demanded full compensation from Rhodesia.

The Rhodesians claims the attacks, carried out last month, were aimed at stopping cross border raids by Patriotic Front guerrillas. But the Zambians say the destruction of their brides has caused food shortages and resulted in increased transport costs an many goods now have to be air-freighted. The Tanzania to Zambia railway is also said to be losing 90-thousand dollars a day. The United Nations mission will report back to the Security Council.
