Background: Amateur Boxing....and the middleweight final in a multi-nation tournament in the Soviet city of Alma-Ata in Kazakhstan on Sunday (2 April), brought together valery Gordeev of the Soviet Union, and Cuban champion Jose Gomes. Gomes, only 19, and a winner in last year's United States-Cuba clash, had height and reach advantage, and won on points after having Gordeev in all sorts of trouble.
SYNOPSIS: Gordeev, a southpaw, wearing the light trunks, had to try and get inside gomes' long reach, but it was no easy task....The Cuban jabbed well, and worked for openings, hoping to get through with a big right....Gomes' hight and reach advantage made all the difference, and several times he clipped Gordeev with solid left-right combinations.
There was plenty for Gordeev's trainer to think about. As the bout progressed, Gomes was scoring with increased regularity and Gordeev began to look weary. The Cuban's punches were beginning to tell and a crisp right-cross dropped Gordeev, knocking out his gumshield. He soon scrambled to his feet, but was forced to take a compulsory eight count....Gomes piled on the pressure. He was warned for pulling on, but by this stage he had things well under control, and another short, jolting left-right combination put gordeev down again.
Gordeev survived, and went the full three rounds, but Gomes took the contest on points.
