Background: A training centre for office workers equipped with advanced audio-visual teaching aids, was opened in Abidjan on Monday (June 22) by Mr. Barry Battesti, the Ivory Coast Minister of Technical Education and Professional Training.

Situated near the war memorial, the centre was built on the initiative of the Minister of Planning. It will train students to work both in public and private sectors of business. The courses last from 4-6 months according to the standard of the students.

Students wanting to enter the centre are examined in French (written and oral), shorthand and typing, and office administration. The centre can accommodate two groups of 15 students. The first course was started on May 11 although the official opening was only recent.

The equipment in the centre includes language laboratories, dictaphones, tape recorders and machines for teaching shorthand. It was built on an agreement between the Ivory Coast National Office for Professional Training and the Geneva-based World ORT Union, which is the largest non-Government professional training organisation.
