Background: A BANNER CARRYING CROWD, THOUSANDS STRONG, WAIT NEAR THE AIRPORT AT TRIVANDRUM, THE CAPITAL OF THE COMMUNIST-RULED STATE OF KERALA IN SOUTH-WEST INDIA. PROMINENT AMONG TEEM WERE WOMEN CARRYING BANNERS SAYING "PROSECUTE COMMUNIST MINISTERS" AND "PROSECUTE MURDERERS". APPARENTLY REFERRING TO THE FOURTEEN DEATHS FROM THE POLICE FIRINGS IN THE STATE DURING THE FORTNIGHT OF AGITATION.

THE DEMONSTRATIONS ARE PART OF A STATE-WIDE AGITATION BY ALL THE OPPOSITION PARTIES FOR THE REMOVAL OF THE COMMUNIST STATE GOVERNMENT WHICH HAS A SMALL MAJORITY IN THE 120-MEMBER STATE ASSEMBLY. THE CHARGE; MISRULE, ABSENCE OF SECURITY LAW AND ORDER AND GOVERNMENT'S ALLEGED ATTEMPTS AT INDOCTRINATION THROUGH CONTROL OF SCHOOLS IN THIS OVER-CROWDED STATE OF 15 MILLION PEOPLE WITH THE HIGHEST LITERACY PERCENTAGE IN INDIA.

AS AN INDIAN AIR FORCE ILYUSHIN TAXIED IN, COMMUNIST CHIEF MINISTER MR. E.M.S. NAMEOODRIPAD (GLASSES) WAS AT THE AIRPORT. THE SIGHTING OF THE PLANE WAS THE SIGNAL FOR THE DEMONSTRATORS TO START SHOUTING SLOGANS.

MR. NEHRU WAS RECEIVED BY STATE GOVERNOR MR. RAMAKRISHNA RAO...AND CLOSELY FOLLOWING HIM WAS CHIEF MINISTER MR. NAMBOODRIPAD WITH A GARLAND.

THE INTENSITY OF THE SLOGAN-SHOUTING INCREASED WHEN THE CROWD SPOTTED NEHRU ALIGHTING FROM THE PLANE.

AS THE PRIME MINISTER WALKED TOWARDS THE WAITING CARS, ANTI-GOVERNMENT SLOGANS WEAR SHOUTED. REPORTS SAY THAT COMMUNIST MINISTERS WERE BOOED AND JEERED.

NEHRU WAS CONSCIOUS OF THE DELICATE TASK AHEAD, HE HAS TO SEE THAT JUSTICE IS BROUGHT TO THE PEOPLE, BUT HAS TO AVOID CHARGES OF PLAYING PARTY POLITICS - HE BELONGS TO THE CONGRESS PARTY WHICH SPEARHEADS THE AGITATION.

OPPOSITION PARTIES ARE DEMANDING THE DISMISSAL OF THE COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT AND PLACE THE PROBLEM STATE UNDER RESIDENT'S RULE.
