Background: Government, North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces are continuing their battle for control of South Vietnam's rich food producing area, the Mekong delta.
The strategy of the North Vietnamese is apparently twofold: to cut Saigon off from the food producing areas of the delta: to capture as much territory as possible before any ???.
Many villages have already fallen in the offensive.
The brunt of responsibility for patrolling villages in the delta has fallen on the local militiamen of the Regional and Popular Forces. They all operate in the areas in which they normally live, which makes then especially valuable in these areas.
The Commander of the Fourth Military Division, under which the area falls, is Major-General Nghi.
