Background: INTRODUCTION: Soccer football.....and Liverpool have won the European Cup for the third time. They beat Real Madrid 1-0 in an earnest, unspectacular match at the Parc des Princes in Paris on Wednesday (27 May). Liverpool's victory meant that the cup, the world's most prestigious club trophy, has gone to an English club five years in a row.

SYNOPSIS: Real, in white, had one English player, Laurie Cunningham. He had missed much of the past season through injury, but troubled Liverpool throughout the game.

Dalglish, who has also had injury worries, found teammate Souness. His shot had nerves fluttering in Real Madrid's defence.

In the second half, Real striker Santillana made an opening, but the finishing was poor, as it proved to be all night for the Spanish team.

Read Madrid have won the European Cup a record six times, but this team could not be compared to their great sides that took the trophy in each of its first five seasons. Liverpool, too, have slipped back in the past couple of years.

Alan Kennedy scored the winning goal for Liverpool after Garcia Cortes missed the ball completely, exposing Augustin to an angled shot he had no chance of stopping.

Liverpool deserved their win because they had been the stronger and more incisive team during the second half. The final whistle was a signal for the eighteen thousand Liverpool supporters to explode into the most feverish burst of celebration during their many excursions into Europe.

Earlier in the season just ended, Liverpool had won the English League Cup, but they'd finished only fifth in the First Division championship, their worst showing for 10 years. Their victory meant that there will once again be two English teams competing for the European Cup - the holders, Liverpool, and Aston Villa, who are the English League champions.
