Background: A large wall is being built round the new house of Dr. Hastings Banda, leader of Nyasaland's Malawi Congress Party. It is at Blantyre - in the European area - and the house costs GBP8,000. Work on the wall continued Nov 11.
Our cameraman said Banda's popularity was on the wane; and he is reported to be a sick man. Both Africans and Europeans are working on the wall, estimated to cost GBP2,000.
Meanwhile, Nyasaland's railway strike continued Nov 11. About 4,000 Africans met at railway yards to hear the latest strike news from their leaders.
At Limbe, nerve centre of the country's railway system, a European labour manager listened to their views. The unofficial strike is over pay. With the exception of essential goods and mail services, trains were at a standstill. European and coloured office workers had to handle goods normally dealt with by Africans.
