Background: Noted French fashion designers, Nina Ricci and Andre Courreges, have largely followed the `simple silhouette' look, which was the most widespread theme among Parisienne fashion houses when they showed their spring and summer fashions last week. For Courreges, the gentler style was light years away from the dramatically-futuristic look of his best remembered collections of the mid-1960s.
SYNOPSIS: But first, two samples of the collection that Nina Ricci unveiled at the famous salon on the Rue des Capucines. This afternoon dress is in crepe de chine imprinted with triangles in many colours. The skirt is pleated from the waist and the hemline discreetly neutral, ending just below the knee.
Now an organza evening gown featuring large orange flowers, a vivid burst of colour to stand out in the crush at even the most frenetic cocktail party. The horizontal layers of the skirt add a Latin touch.
At Courreges, the talent for outrageous gimmickry was given a pleasant rest. He produced something of a little-girl-on-her-way to-Sunday-school look with this dress in crepe silk, featuring a neat pink and white pattern. Like many other designers, this week Courreges has chosen to leave women's shape as nature intended, though the deep, gathered waist here does give the bustline some engineering support.
Courreges, the rugby fanatic, could not resist a sporting note with this dusty lavender shirt in a modified safari style and an attached hood with snowwhite lining. The material is corduroy, and the front fastened with a line of delicate toggles. By cinching the waist tightly beneath a leather belt, Courreges has complemented the nipped-in top of the accompanying skirt in white poplin. He has made girls look like girls instead of junior space cadets.
