Background: Each night since de Gauelleos May 30th speech - "I will not resign" - Gaullist supporters have rallied at the Arc de Triomphe to voice their support for 'Le Generale. Cars full of excited youthful supporters drive round and around the Etiole waving tricolour flags while their horns blare out the same old theme "dah dah dit dit dit" - ( if anyone knows morse maybe they can find a different translation than that given by the supporters of:-) "Long Live General De Gaulle.".. An added excitement was given to the scene last night when a searchlight unit of the French Army's Eighth Division set up there searchlights - red, white, and blue - and focused them on the giant Tricolour flag hung beneath the Arc over the Eternal Flame."
Their beams, probing the night sky beyond the structure of the Arc, provided a navigation beacon to the many thousands of tourists and Frenchmen from the Provinces who flocked to swell the crowds and soak up some of this "V-Day" type atmosphere."
