Background: Chairman of the International League of Red Cross Societies during this centenary year is Canadian John A. MacCauley, a Winnipeg lawyer. He was elected Sept. 29 in Athens, Greece.
In the ballot at the Drakopoulion hall he polled 40 votes against 21 for Princess Rajkumari Amrit of India, and 3 for Fernando Coronel of Brazil. Mr. MacCauley succeeds Swedish judge Emil Sandstrom.
The Asian bloc and Russia voted in favour of the Canadian - causing much surprise among the delegates.
Over 200 delegates from 65 countries are attending this the 25th Session of the League - opened Sept. 25 by Greek Queen Fredericka - including Belgian King Baudouin's brother Prince Albert; Italian President's wife Mrs. Gronchi; US Red Cross President and former SHAPE C-in-C General Gruenther; members of the Red Crescent (operating in Arab nations, Turkey and parts of USSR) and the Red Lion and Sun of Persia.
