    Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, speaking in the beleaguered city of Beirut on July 27, demand that the United States officially recognise the Palestine Liberation Organisation. It was his first statement since signing a document with a group of American congressmen with appeared, at first, to signify his acceptance of all United Nations resolutions relevant to the Palestine question, including the right of Israel to exist as a state. Speaking in Beirut as Israeli warplanes and artillery bombarded PLO positions in the west of the city, Mr. Arafat clarified his position.
