Background: FRENCH TROOPS HAVE JOINED LOCAL FIRE FIGHTERS BATTLING AGAINST A SERIES OF FOREST FIRES WHICH, DRIVEN BY STRONG WINDS, ARE SPREADING IN THE HILLS BETWEEN FREJUS AND HYERES, IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE.

THE CLOUDS OF DENSE SMOKE WERE CLEARLY VISIBLE FROM NICE AND CANNES. HUNDREDS OF CIVILIANS AND HOLIDAYMAKERS JOINED BRIGADES FIGHTING THE FLAMES, AS SPARKS FROM BURNING TREES STARTED HUNDREDS OF SMALLER FIRES. A COMMAND POST HAS BEEN SET UP AT AGAY TO DIRECT THE OPERATIONS.

NEAR AGAY, THE FIRE WAS SWEPT ALONG A 900 YARD FRONT AT ABOUT SIX MILES AN HOUR. RECENT DRY WEATHER HAS TURNED BRUSHWOOD AND TREES TO TINDER. FARMER'S FAMILIES WERE EVACUATED FROM OUTLINING VILLAGES BUT THE FIRE FIGHTERS WERE UNABLE TO SAVE MANY HOMES AND HOLIDAY VILLAS.
