Background: The sidewalks and alleyways of Rome are filling with uncollected sacks and overflowing caps, of garbage because the collectors have gone on strike once again.

SYNOPSIS: Last week they had their first strike - for higher wages - and that went on for six days. Those historically famous Roman roses began to wrinkle with disgust as the city's odour deteriorated.

Then he first strike ended seemingly because The garbage collectors sand their bosses had reached some kind of agreement. But, observers said, it must have been a truce rather than an agreement.

The collector decided that, three days later (13 December) they would go back on strike until the following Sunday. Their action has taken Rome back two thousand years to the days of garbage-filled streets and ripe smells.
