Background: The jet plane Trident II has recently won for France the world altitude record. The machine was piloted by Roger Carpentier.
Trident II thus regains for France one of the three recognised and essential records - the other two being speed and endurance records.
The achievement is the more remarkable because the Trident is not a large plane like the British "Canberra", the preceding holder of the altitude record.
On the contrary, the Trident II has extremely limited wing- span. Trident II is n MACH II class of 'plane, and is capable of a very high performance.
Built by the Societe Sud Avion, the Trident is an interceptor aircraft.
