SEQ. 1: "THE CALL OF A BEER FOR ME, AND JUST A SPLASH FOR MY RADIO, COULD SOON BECOME A FAMILIAR PHRASE IN NEW ZEALAND PUBS. YOU SEE, AN ELECTRONICS EXPERT FROM WANGANUI HAS JUST INVENTED THIS RADIO - WHICH BELIEVE IT OR NOT, RUNS ON BEER. THERE'S THREE LITTLE CELLS AT THE BACK, AND YOU JUST THEM UP WITH BEER. USING A LOCAL BRAND JUST HERE, DON'T FORGET YOUR OWN GLASS OF COURSE, PLUG IN YOUR EARPHONE AND YOU'VE GOT FOUR DAYS OF HAPPY LISTENING ON JUST THAT AMOUNT OF BEER. YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME - WELL I'LL PLAY IT FOR YOU DOWN MY MICROPHONE". RADIO IS HEARD.

SEQ. 2: THE BEER RADIO WORKS ON ANY BRAND OF BEER, EVEN FLAT BEER.....OF COURSE IF YOU'RE A TEETOTALLER, THIS MIGHT SEEM TO BE A BIT OF A PROBLEM, BUT TAKE IT TO HEART IT'LL ALSO WORK ON LEMON JUICE, VINEGAR AND EVEN COLD TEA.....THE THREE BEER CELLS PRODUCE 0.7 OF A VOLT AT 2-MILLIAMPS, AND THIS POWERS THE FOUR TRANSISTORS ON THE RADIO AND THE LITTLE EARPHONE. RADIO IS HEARD.

Background: IN THE YEAR IN WHICH MAN FIRST STEPPED FOOT ONTO THE MOON, A MODEST ELECTRONICS EXPERT IN WANGANUI, NEAR WELLINGTON, MR. JIM COYLE HAS ADDED HIS OWN CONTRIBUTION TO SCIENCE.....BY INVENTING A RADIO WHICH RUNS ON BEER, INSTEAD OF THE TRADITIONAL BATTERY.

POWER UNIT FOR THE RADIO IS A BANK OF THREE PLASTIC CONTAINERS, EACH WITH A PAIR OF DISSIMILAR METAL CONTACTS. WHEN FILLED WITH BEER, THE THREE-CELL POWER UNIT PRODUCES 0.7 VOLTS AT 2 MILLIAMPS.

THE RADIO ITSELF HAS FOUR TRANSISTORS AND DRIVES AN EARPHONE. THE INVENTOR SAYS IT'S POSSIBLE TO USE MORE CELLS AND POWER A LOUDSPEAKER, BUT THIS REQUIRES MORE LIQUID CONTENT - A SITUATION HE REGARDS AS CRIMINAL NEGLIGENCE. A FULL CHARGE OF BEER - AND ALL BRANDS ARE ACCEPTABLE, EVEN WHEN FLAT - WILL POWER THE RADIO FOR ABOUT FOUR-DAYS.

TEETOTALLERS, SAYS MR. COYLE, NEED NOT FEEL OUT OF IT AS HIS RADIO WILL WORK JUST AS EFFECTIVELY ON LEMON JUICE, VINEGAR OR COLD TEA.

THE INVENTOR, HOWEVER, WOULD NOT DISCLOSE THE SECRET OF HIS SUCCESS, AND TO MAKE SURE IT REMAINS THAT WAY, HE RECENTLY HAD HIS BRAIN INSURED FOR ONE-MILLION-NEW ZEALAND DOLLARS (APPROX 480- THOUSAND POUNDS - STERLING).
