Background: Six people died and 12 were wounded when gunmen went on the rampage at a Jewish restaurant in Paris on August 9. Two young men walked into the Jo Goldenberg restaurant posing as lunchtime customers, then hurled a grenade and sprayed diners and staff with bullets from machine pistols. Minutes later, they calmly walked along the street outside shooting people trying to hide in doorways or behind parked cars. They drove off as police arrived at the restaurant, which is near the Place de la Bastille. Blood stained the pavements and inside the restaurant there was chaos. Tables and chairs were overturned, blood was smeared on the walls. A group called Direct Action later claimed responsibility for the attack. Police believe Direct Action has connections with the Middle East. The attack took place in a predominantly Jewish area of Paris, and local businessmen said were sent several vague threats recently. Some received telephone calls, and notes have been pinned on doors and windows. Condemning the slaughter, the Israeli Embassy said there had been a recent upsurge in attacks against Jewish and Israeli targets in France. The attacks came against a background of anti-Semitic propaganda, the embassy said. The Palestine Liberation Organisation's (PLO) bureau in Paris also condemned the attack on the restaurant.
