Background: Soccer, and Italy beat Belgium 1-0 in a friendly match in Liege, Belgium, on Wednesday (21 December).

SYNOPSIS: The Italians, in dark blue shirts and playing from left to right, were below full strength. Only three of the 11 Italians who played in the recent World Cup match in London against England were in the side to face the Belgians. So, naturally they were taking no chances.

Belgium, who have already been eliminated from the World Cup, had injected new blood, but to no avail.

They misses their chances in the first half. Italy, on the other hand, mixed caution with aggression and came upfield with many passing movements, and looked like taking the lead at any moment.

The Italians are safely through to next year's World Cup finals in Argentina, and for manager Enzo Bearzot, the friendly match was a time to experiment.

On the half hour, Giancarlo Antognoni, of Italy, caught the Belgian goal keeper Jean-Marie Pfaff off guard with a fine shot which scrapped a post. Then Paolino Pulici beat Pfaff but the referee ruled him offside.

At times, the match looked anything but friendly...as it moved to the second half with the score still standing 0-0. Two players - one from either side - got the yellow card.

Seventeen minutes from the end, the Italians went ahead. Antognoni scored the winning goal by hammering a free-kick through the Belgian wall.
