Background: Despite the presence of several squads of police-men and a police camera man making a cine-record of the proceedings, and the criticism a from the Labour Party, the Kaltess Progressive Constitutional Party held an open air meeting here today. The purpose of the meeting was to voice the Party's complaints against the Mintoff Labour Government.
This coincides with the return of Mr. Mintoff, the Prime Minister, from England where he continued his talks with the Government there on the integration or independence of Malta. The leader of the P.C.P. Miss Mabol Strickland, who has also recently returned from London, where she carried out a personal fact-finding tour, whilat Mr. Mintoff was at his discussions there, thus being able to obtain first hand information of these talks, addressed the meeting.
She pin-pointed examples of the Labour Government's inability to run the country, and criticised its misrepresentation of the facts, to electorate, the London talks.
Several members of the P.C.P. spoke to the gathering, and they all emphasised the mishandling of Malta's affairs by Mr. Mintoff's Government and the lack of fire in the Opposition (the Nationalists) party in defending the liberties of the individual.
One spokesman for the P.C.P. Mr. Montanaro, stated that the Government had accused the party of 'playing with fire, whereas its main concern was for the preservation of harmony within Malta and amicable relations with Britain.
Another speaker, Mr. Shepherd said that the country was continuously being told that it was passing through a National crisis, but really these crisis were the result of Mr. Mintoff's policies.
The meeting preceded in an orderly manner and dispersed quietly when the speaker had finished.
