Background: Soccer...and world champions Argentina continued their European tour with a 2-2 draw against Italy in Rome's Olympic Stadium on Saturday (26 May). It was a friendly-match, but one Argentina wanted to win. In the final stages of last year's (1978) World Cup in Argentina, Italy beat the home-team 1-0. The South American side were anxious to put the record straight in Rome. But the Italians had other ideas and fought the world champions courageously.

SYNOPSIS: Argentina in the striped shirts attack down mid-field, Valencia shots for goal. Italian goal-keeper Zoff couldn't hold the ball and Argentina took a one-nil lead.

The eighty-thousand spectators were demoralised by the early Argentine goal, and Italy took a long time to recover. The equaliser came after twenty-five minutes. From the wing, Causio made no mistake. Italy 1, Argentine 1 and that the way the score stayed until half-time.

Italy kicked-off the second half, determined to score again. Argentina showed only glimpses of the speed and attacking skills which make them world champions.

Italy dominated the second half, often finding holes in Argentina's defence.

After fifty-three minutes Rossi beat the Argentinian goal-keeper Fillol to put Italy in the lead for the first time in the match.

Less than a minute later Argentina's Maradona equalised with a penalty - saving the champions from defeat. Final score Italy 2, Argentina 2.
