Background: Lebanon's new Prime Minister designate, Dr. Amin Al-Hafez, told ???man on Thursday (April 19) that his aim was to form a new Government which would respond to the aspirations of the Lebanese people, the challenges of modern times and the circumstances existing in the country.
But Dr. Al-Hafez said he did not think decrees forming a new Government would be issued immediately. There were no obstacles but he preferred to take time to make up his mind on the shape the new government would take.
Dr. Al-Hafez, a middle aged Professor of Economics who has never before held a Cabinet pest was named as Premier designate by President Franjieh on Wednesday (April 18).
He will replace Mr. Saeb Salam who resigned following the recent Israeli raids on Lebanon.
The Premier designate has been a deputy for the northern town of Tripoli since 1960 and is chairman of the Parliamentary Foreign Relations committee.
He is a member of the Parliamentary bloc headed by former Premier Rashid Karami and a firm opponent of Mr. Salam.
It was reported that the resignation of the outgoing Premier was a protest against the lack of organised resistance by security forces to the Israeli squads which killed three Palestinian leaders in Beirut on April 10. Eleven other people were killed and 30 wounded in the raids.
The new Premier has to face the task of maintaining good relations between the Lebanese authorities and the Palestinian Resistance movement as well as protecting Lebanon's territory against Israeli attacks.
