Background: Three United States sailors were killed and ten injured on Sunday (29 November) in a fire aboard a polaris submarine tender moored at the U.S. Navy's submarine base in Holy Loch, Scotland.

The fire broke out at midnight on Saturday (28 November) in a baggage room of the 22,000 ten tender "Canopus". Two polaris submarines with nuclear missiles were moored alongside the tender.

Firemen finally brought the blaze under control after fighting it for two hours. The U.S. navy commander said that one of the submarines, the "USS Francis Scott", had been moved away from the tender. But, he emphasised, at no time had there been any danger to the missile-carrier.

The 1,000 crew of the tender who were ashore on weekend leave were called back to help fight the blaze. Later, the only evidence of the fierce fire was a blackened hull. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the U.S. navy.
