Background: Thousands of Indonesians this week paid their last respects to their former President, Bung Sukarno, who died last month.

On Thursday (July 29) they came from all over Java to scatter flower petals and banana leaves on his simple grave just outside the East Java town of Blitar.

It was the 40th day since the death of the founder of modern Indonesia - the day Moslems believe the spirit of the deceased leaves the earth.

Armed troops stood guard to prevent possible demonstrations by Dr. Sukarno's supporters, but there were no incidents reported.

Many of the mourners also paid their respects at the home of Dr. Sukarno's eldest sister, Madame Wardojo. Among them was his Japanese-born widow, Madame Ratna Sari Dewi.
