Background: THOUSANDS OF BERBER TRIBESMEN HAVE RALLIED TO THE ALGERIAN GOVERNMENT'S AID IN THE BORDER CONFLICT WITH MOROCCO. FOR THE PAST THREE AND A HALF WEEKS THEY HAVE BEEN FIGHTING GOVERNMENT TROOPS BECAUSE OF A DISAGREEMENT WITH THE BEN BELLA REGIME.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT THE BERBERS WOULD JOIN IN A UNITED FRONT WITH REGULAR TROOPS CAME AS MOROCCAN AND ALGERIAN UNITS FOUGHT DEEP IN THE SAHARA OVER SEVERAL DISPUTED FRONTIER POSITIONS.

MEANWHILE, FROM MARRAKESH, KING HASSAN HAS APPEALED TO PRESIDENT BEN BELLA TO "CO-EXIST WITH THE MONARCHY YOU ARE CALLING NAMES" AND HAS STRESSED HIS WILLINGNESS TO MEET THE ALGERIAN LEADER "WITHOUT ANY PRIOR CONDITIONS."
FOUR DAYS AGO A PARTY OF EGYPTIAN OFFICERS WERE CAPTURED BY MOROCCAN TROOPS AND ONE MOROCCAN DECLARATION ALLEGED EGYPT WAS INTERVENING IN THE DESERT DISPUTE. BUT AT THE UNITED NATIONS THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC DELEGATION SAID THE CAPTURED OFFICERS WERE MEMBERS OF A TRAINING MISSION IN ALGERIA. "ONE COULD HARDLY INTERPRET THEIR PRESENCE AS HAVING ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE BORDER DISPUTE," SAID THE DELEGATION.

YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY), NEWSMEN WERE TAKEN ON A LATE NIGHT VISIT TO SEE THE CAPTURED OFFICERS AT AN AIRBASE NEAR MARRAKESH.
