Background: The flags of Bangladesh, Grenada and Guinea-Bissau were raised for the first time outside the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Wednesday (18 September) following the admission of the three countries to the world organisation the previous day.

The ceremony took place in the courtyard of the U. N. complex where the flags of all member states....now totalling one hundred and thirty eight.....are hoisted daily.

For Bangladesh, whose independence has been recognised by most countries since January, 1972, following the India-Pakistan war, it was the end of a two and a half year battle to gain U. N. membership.

Its original application in 1972 was voted by The People's Republic of China for alleged violations of the U. N. Charter and Resolutions.

China lifted its veto after Pakistan gave recognition in February this year, and the Bangladesh application was finally approved on 7 June.

Guinea-Bissau suffered similar recognition problems, with most countries recognising the former portuguese territory in Africa for more than a year.

Portugal finally gave its official recognition a fortnight ago.

The former Caribbean British colony of Grenada gained its independence in February this year.

A small demonstration by dissidents opposed to the Grenada regime of Prime Minister Dr. Eric Gairy was staged opposite the U. N. complex during the flag raising ceremony.

    The demonstration was noisy butnon-violent.

Dr. Gairy, along with the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Dr. Kamal Hossein, and the Commissioner for Foreign Affaire of Guinea-Bissau, Mr. Victory Saude Maria, attended the flag raising.
