CHARLTON: "The training's hard and I don't want to embarrass my family by becoming a millstone, if you know what I mean. Next season it could possibly have happened that I wouldn't be able to command a first team place.



REPORTER: "You've always had this image of being a gentleman of football. How hard's it been to keep up sometimes?"



CHARLTON: "Well, it's not a title that I appreciate really because there's lots of times I really feel like having a good go at referees, etc. But it's something that I've had and that I've had to live up to, I'm afraid. It makes things a bit difficult actually."



REPORTER: "Do you think the game's getting dirtier in general then?"



CHARLTON: "No. The game's no dirtier at all. I think the game's cleaner now than it's ever been. Maybe it's not as sporting as it used to be, but it's certainly cleaner I can remember when I first started playing, that there were dirty players in the game, much more so then today."

Background: One of soccer's outstanding figures, Bobby Charlton of England and Manchester United, (captain) has announced that he's retiring as a player but hopes to take up a managerial post in the game. Charlton was one of the original "Busby Babes". He was signed on by Sir Matt Busby, the then manager of Manchester United and made his first appearance for the club against Charlton Athletic nearly seventeen years ago, scoring twice in the game.

He survived the Munich air disaster of 1958 in which many of the club's best players died. He went on to play six hundred league games for United and appear in a record 106 international for England between 1958 and 1970.

Now aged thirty-five, Charlton played his last international for England against West Germany in the 1970 World Cup finals in Mexico. In all he's scored an England record of 4 goals in international matches. As well as his outstanding scoring ability he has a high reputation for integrity on and off the pitch and in 1969 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to soccer.

SYNOPSIS: Bobby Charlton, one of world soccer's outstanding figures is to retire as a player. Noted for his scoring ability as well as his gentlemanly conduct on and off the pitch he's decided that thirty-five is old enough to be a player. He hopes to stay in the game as a manager.

The nineteen fifty-eight Munich air crash which killed many of his Manchester United teammates was one of the most harrowing vents of his life. At United's Old Trafford ground he was asked for his thoughts about soccer.
