    Background: USA, CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO

American attorney Melvin Belli said he has been approached by six Indian lawyers to lead a suit in the US against Union Carbide -in an attempt to win compensation for the victims of the Bhopal gas leak. Belli said the action suit, which would be worth an estimated 15 billion dollars, would help the thousands of Indians injured by the poisonous gas. Belli mentioned Union Carbide Chairman Warren Anderson's request to be tried in the US for criminal negligence, rather than India. "My clients want to be tried in the United States too", said Belli, "and they want US damages."
