    THE MEETING OF THE AFRICAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE OF THE INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANISATION IS UNDER WAY IN DAKAR, SENEGAL. IT HAS ALREADY BEEN ADDRESSED BY PRESIDENT SENGHOR, AND WILL CONTINUE ITS TALKS UNTIL NEXT FRIDAY (OCTOBER 20).

    THE COMMITTEE IS EXAMINING THE ILO'S TECHNICAL CO-OPERATION PROGRAMMES IN AFRICA, AND AFRICAN EMPLOYMENT POLICY. IT IS MADE UP OF 20 GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES, TEN EMPLOYERS AND TEN WORKERS.

    IN HIS SPEECH, PRESIDENT SENGHOR SAID THE ILO HAD ALREADY ACHIEVED THE GREATEST PROGRESS IN THE FIELD OF FUNDAMENTAL LIBERTIES OF ANY OF THE UNITED NATIONS SPECIALIST INSTITUTES.

    PRESIDENT SENGHOR QUOTED THE GROWTH IN TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE THAT THE ILO HAD DEVOTED TO AFRICA SINCE 1950. THIS, HE SAID, HAD SEEN AFRICA MOVE TO THE FIRST PLACE INT HE DISTRIBUTION OF ASSISTANCE FUNDS.

    A FURTHER SPEECH TO THE COMMITTEE WAS MADE BY MR C. FREDERICK JENKS, WHO IS DEPUTY DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE ILO.
