Background: World champion woman sprinter Chi Cheng collapsed in the middle of a race at the Asian Games in Bangkok yesterday (Sunday). The 26-year-old Taiwan girl tumbled down, clutching her injured leg, as she was heading to certain victory in the 400 metres final.
It was waterlogged rack for yesterday's events with Miss Chi, the holder of three world records, running with her left thigh heavily strapped against an earlier injury.
After a false start in the 400 metres, the field got away with Miss Chi streaking into what seemed certain to be an unassailable lead. But as she came round the final bend with victory in sight, the dramatic breakdown occurred. She gasped with pain as she was helped from track.
The mishap presented an unexpected gold medal to India's Sandhu Kamaljit, who herself collapsed after finishing and had to be helped off the track by teammates.
Latest report say Miss Chi's injury could put her out of action for six months - a stunning blow on a day when her American coach, Vince Reel, announced they planned to get married in the near future.
