Background: After the new American Cabinet were sworn in at a White House ceremony Jan. 21, President Kennedy changed the very formal atmosphere into one of extreme informality when he invited the audience of Cabinet members wives and children to gather round for group photographs.
Chief Justice Earl Warren officiated at the oath taking ceremony, and in a speech afterwards President Kennedy thanked him for his help and congratulated the new Cabinet members. He ended his speech by saying: "As a citizen I think we are fortunate to have them all. As President of the United States, I find in heartening. And therefore it is a great pleasure for me to welcome them as part of the official family. They are all patriotic men who are devoted to the welfare of their country. and I am confident that they will meet their responsibilities with high distinction."
