Background: In the Ivory Coast a two day international symposium on "Energy Prospects in Africa" ended in pessimistic mood with some experts saying that despite the existence of other new forms of energy sources it was advisable to limit fuel consumption now.

SYNOPSIS: The World Energy Conference organised the symposium to coincide with their own international executive committee meeting. the Ivory Coast's Minister of State M. Auguste Denise opened the executive committee meeting which was hoped to prepare the ground for the world conference on energy in Turkey next September. Representatives from 54 of the conference's 72 member countries attended the executive meeting.

The delegates heard the Ivory Coast's Panning Minister M. Mohamed Diawars say that the energy crisis had caused disagreement and division between oil producing countries and the major industrial oil consuming countries.

M. Diawara said he wanted to see rich oil consuming countries and oil producing countries getting together to find ways of easing the burden on poorer countries, that have neither oil supplies nor enough capital to buy the oil they need.

Several speakers at the conference stressed that even though the world's potential energy resources were not yet exhausted, the present level of consumption gave grounds for concern about future supplies and some form of limit was probably needed now. The executive committee's outgoing president M. Roger Gaspard of France also suggested that a special committee should be created to study Africa's energy needs.
