    Background: SPA, BELGIUM

The Rothmans Porsche team scored a one-two victory for the first time this season when they took first and second place in the World Endurance Race at Spa, in Belgium, on September 2. The driving partnership of Derek Bell and Stefan Bellof, in car number two, took first place from their teammates in car number one, Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass. Third was the Gaggia Brun Porsche of Oscar Laurrari and Massimo Sigala. The 144-lap 1000-kilometre race, run in heat wave conditions through the Ardennes Forest, took its toll of the cars. Most of the cars in the large field suffered some form of engine problems, and even the eventual winners were hampered by persistent fuel -feed misfire. The result of the Spa race has confirmed Porsche as the winner of the manufacturers World Endurance Championship for 1984, the third year they have taken the title. It also keeps Jochen Mass in the lead for the driver's championship, although both Bellof and Bell are now drawing closer to him. The championship now moves on to Imola in Italy on two weeks time.
