Background: Archaeologists digging at Xanten on the banks of the Rhine for the past fourteen days have unearthed striking evidence of a roman encampment there - believed to be the Colonia Trajana, the camp of the 30th legion.

At Colonia Trajana were a Basilica (a meeting hall), the Castra Vestra (a soldiers barracks), and an amphitheatre about 1 km to the south.

From the detail of the ceramics and coins being unearthed on this site, much invaluable information is being gleaned of the way of life of these 3rd century BC soldiers and the citizens who accompanied them.
