Background: A MAURITIAN MAGICIAN, YANKO SHIRBA, SPENT 24 HOURS OF LAST WEEK AT THE BOTTOM OF PORT LOUIS HARBOUR -- LOCKED IN A TRUNK.

IT WAS A FEAT REMINISCENT OF THE GREAT AMERICAN MAGICIAN HOUDINI WHO BY THE EARLY 1900'S HAD EARNED AN INTERNATIONAL REPUTATION FOR HIS DARING FEATS OF EXTRICATION FROM SHACKLES AND LOCKED CONTAINERS. BUT THERE WAS AN IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE.

LIKE HOUDINI, SHIRBA ALLOWED HIMSELF TO BE SHACKLED WITH IRONS AND HANDCUFFS AND PLACED IN A TRUNK WHICH WAS PADLOCKED AND THEN SUBMERGED. IT WAS HERE HOWEVER THAT THE SIMILARITY ENDED.

WHILE HOUDINI, NO DOUBT FOLLOWING MINUTES OF FURIOUS ACTIVITY, REPEATED AFTER FREEING HIMSELF UNDER WATER SHIRBA RELAXED AND WAITED.

THEN 24 HOURS LATER AS A HUGE CROWD GATHERED ON THE QUAYSIDE, SHIRBA'S RESTING PLACE WAS HAULED TO THE SURFACE UNLOCKED AND OUT CAME SHIRBA APPARENTLY FIT AND WELL.

HE WAS GIVEN A HERO'S WELCOME PERHAPS MAKING THE CAMP AND LONELY DAY HE HAD SPENT UNDER WATER WORTHWHILE.
