Background: A UNITED STATES AIR FORCE B-58 "HUSTLER" JET-BOMBER BROKE THREE TRANS-CONTINENTAL SPEED RECORDS MARCH 5, BY CROSSING THE UNITED STATES FROM WEST TO EAST AND CONTINUING NON-STOP FROM EAST TO WEST. COMPLETING THE DOUBLE FLIGHT OF 4,900 MILES IN 4 HOURS 42 MINUTES 32 SECONDS, WHICH INCLUDED 26 MINUTES FOR TURNING ROUND AND REFUELLING IN MID-AIR OVER THE ATLANTIC.

THE DELTA-WINGED B-58 TOOK OFF FROM CARSWELL AIR FORCE BASE IN TEXAS TO UNDERGO REFUELLING IN MID-AIR OVER THE PACIFIC, READY FOR THE BEGINNING OF THE FLIGHT FROM LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA. ONCE THE RECORD-BREAKING FLIGHT EASTWARDS TO NEW YORK HAD BEGUN, FURTHER MID-AIR REFUELLINGS WERE MADE ONE HALF WAY TO NEW YORK, ONE OVER THE ATLANTIC, AND A THIRD WHEN HALF WAY BACK TO CALIFORNIA.

MOST OF THE FLIGHT WAS AT 50,000-FEET, AND AT MORE THAT 1,300 M.P.H., CAUSING A 40-MILE WIDE SONIC BOOM WHICH WAS FELT ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY, INCLUDING NEW YORK CITY. DAMAGE WAS CAUSED TO WINDOWS, WALLS, AND DOORS OF HOUSES BY THE EXPLOSIONS CAUSED AS THE AIRCRAFT PASSED THROUGH THE SOUND BARRIER. THE LOS ANGELES-NEW YORK FLIGHT TOOK 2 HOURS 1 MINUTE, THE REFUELLING OVER THE ATLANTIC TOOK 26 MINUTES, AND THE "HUSTLER" STREAKED BACK TO LOS ANGELES AGAIN IN 2 HOURS 15 MINUTES. THE TOTAL FLIGHT WAS OVER TWO HOURS FASTER THAN THE PREVIOUS RECORD SET BY A "VOODOO" FIGHTER IN 1957.

BACK AT LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, THE B-58 CREW MEMBERS - PILOT CAPTAIN ROBERT SOWERS; NAVIGATOR CAPTAIN ROBERT MACDONALD; AND DEFENCE SYSTEMS OPERATOR CAPTAIN JOHN WALTON - WERE CONGRATULATED BY GENERAL THOMAS POWER, CHIEF OF STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND, AND RECEIVED FROM HIM THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL. ANOTHER REWARD FOR THE FLIGHT WAS THE BENDIX TROPHY - A THREE-FEET HIGH STATUE BEARING THE NAMES OF PREVIOUS WINNERS WHO MADE AVIATION HISTORY UNDER A PLAGUE READING "THE BENDIX FREE-FOR-ALL TRANSCONTINENTAL SPEED RACE."
