Background: Thousands of people took part in a charity walk for needy Hong Kong residents on October 13. The 5.5 kilometre walk was organized by The Community Chest of Hong Kong charity. More than 100,000 sponsorship forms were distributed for the event. Community Chest was established in 1968 and has organized 45 charity walks since then. A main highway as walker enjoyed warm sunshine and panoramic views of the harbour. All entrants who made it to the finish at Shaukeiwan received a certificate of merit and the satisfaction of a good day's work in aid of the less well off. In spite of Hong Kong's position as a thriving trading and manufacturing centre and tourist destination, many thousands of the island's inhabitants live in poverty in overcrowded conditions. The Community Chest, through its 87 member agencies, carries out vital work in caring for the people on the bottom of the economic ladder.
