Background: Libya has given 36 western oil companies two weeks to negotiate new and higher prices for Mediterranean oil.
Libya is backed by Algeria, Iraq and Saudi-Arabia who say that they are happy that Libya should negotiate for them.
Libya's deadline for the oil companies came in an announcement by the Deputy Prime Minister, Major Abdel Salem Jalloud. He said that if talks ended with any company before the deadline, the terms of the agreement with that company would be applied to the other companies whether they accepted them or not.
