Background: U.S.S.R., LENINGRAD, JUBILEE PALACE OF SPORTS

The Soviet National team played its last match, already as champion against the Swedish National team at the World Youth Championships in the Jubilee Palace, Leningrad on January 4, when the Swedes required only a win for the bronze medal position.

The Soviets lead tactically and territorially early in the first period, which made the Swedes shudder on several occasions, although their goal-keeper Gustavsson was the fittest in his position. However the Swedish Forward Eklund scored the first goal in the match in the 12th minute. In the 18th minute - hard as it was - Soviet Shtepa scored a counter goal to finish up the first period in a draw.

Soviet Volghin and Shtepa managed to score 3 - 1 in the second period, although the Swedes were in the visible lead late in the period. Although granted the right to a bullet kick, Dalin of Sweden failed to outplay the Soviet goal-keeper Goloshumov. The third period of play revealed the Soviet tactical efficiency and apparent superior physical endurance which ended in Volghin and Starkov scoring another two goals making the final score 5 - 1.
