Background: LEADERS OF NIGERIA'S WESTERN REGION MET IN IBADAN AT THE WEEKEND TO DISCUSS THE COUNTRY'S POLITICAL SITUATION AND PARTICULARLY THE THREATENED BREAK AWAY BY THE EASTERN REGION, LED BY THE REGION'S MILITARY GOVERNOR, LIEUTENANT COLONEL WHEN THE IBADAN MEETING ENDED YESTERDAY WOULD PRESS FOR A NATIONAL CONSTITUTIONAL MEETING AT WHICH EACH OF THE COUNTRY'S REGIONS WOULD HAVE ABSOLUTE EQUALITY.

MEANWHILE, TENSION BETWEEN THE EASTERN REGION AND THE REST OF NIGERIA CONTINUES TO MOUNT. THE BORDER BETWEEN THE REGION AND THE WESTERN REGION IS MANNED BY ARMED POLICE AND TRAFFIC ACROSS THE BORDER IS SUBJECT TO CONTINUAL CLOSE INSPECTION.

AN ADJOURNED MEETING OF LEADERS FROM ALL OVER NIGERIA IS DUE TO MEET AGAIN NEXT WEEK.. WESTERN REGION LEADERS FAVOUR THE TALKS AS A MEANS OF KEEPING THE EASTERN REGION WITHIN THE NIGERIA FEDERATION, AND ARE GENERALLY OPPOSED TO THE USE OF FORCE TO KEEP EASTERN UNDER FEDERAL CONTROL.

COLONEL OJUKWU, HOWEVER, HAS BEEN INSISTING ON GREATER AUTONOMY FOR THE EASTERN REGION. HE TOLD A RALLY AT UYO AT THE WEEKEND THAT HIS GOVERNMENT WAS DISCUSSING WITH OTHER REGIONAL LEADERS WAYS IN WHICH THEY COULD EXIST PEACEABLY AND SAID THAT AS FAR AS HE WAS CONCERNED, THE CRISIS WAS OVER.

LEADERS OF THE NORTHERN NIGERIA ALSO MET AT THE WEEKEND TO DISCUSS THE SITUATION, AND ARE SAID TO BE IN FAVOUR OF FIRM ACTION TO PREVENT COLONEL OJUKWU'S DEFIANCE. BOTH WESTERN AND NORTHERN LEADERS ARE EXPECTED TO SUBMIT THEIR PROPOSALS TO NIGERIA'S MILITARY, LIEUTENANT COLONEL YAKUBO GOWON, BEFORE THE ALL-REGION CONSTITUTIONAL MEETING RE-ASSEMBLES.
