    Background: Britain was the overall winner in the "European" waterskiing championships which ended at the Hartbespoort Dam near Pretoria. south Africa, on Saturday (28 September). British skiers scored an aggregate of 7,679 points. Second place went to the Italian team with 7,436 points and the Swedish team took third place with 6,233 points.

    Paul Seaton of Britain was overall leader in the men's section, followed by Lars Bjork of Sweden and Max Hofer of Italy.

    Seaton also won the gold medal in the figures event and along with Hofer broke the Jump Record held by James Carne for two years by clearing 157 ft. 6 ins. (47.99 metres). Another British skier, Michael Hazelwood, the European Junior Champion, won the silver medal.

    The leaders of the women's section were Willie Staehle of Holland, chantal Escot of France and Karin Morse of Britain.

    SYNOPSIS: The jumping event attracted the attention of a large crowd of spectators who stood fascinated by the speed, grace and accuracy of some of Europe's top water-skiers. Men like Seaton of Britain, Hofer of Italy and Bjork of Sweden.

    They were not to be disappointed. Paul Seaton - seen here - and Max Hofer tied by jumping one hundred and fifty seven feet six inches to set a new European record for Jumping.
