Background: Students staged silent sit-in demonstrations at 20 Paris high schools on Thursday to protest against the jailing of 18-year-old schoolboy Gilles Guiot. Guiot was sentenced to three months in jail for punching a policeman.

Paris magistrates staged a silent protest at the Palais de Justice in response to allegations of cowardice levelled against French magistrates by the Secretary-General of the ruling Gaullist party. Magistrates were accused of being too lenient with student demonstrators.
