Background: VISNEWS Feb 14 filmed the arrival in Dortmund, Germany, of an advance party, 122 officers and men, of the 47th Guided Missile Regiment, Royal Artillery...equipped with the American medium range 'Corporal' missile.
The unit was detained at Hamm, 25 miles from Dortmund and taken to Napier Barracks, a former Luftwaffe airfield outside Dortmund. Commanded by Lieutenant Colonel J.E. Cordingly the Regiment has been the centre of disturbances over their being stationed at Dortmund.
Two members of the Bundestag went to NATO headquarters at Fontainbeau recently and reported back to the burgomaster of Dortmund that General Norstad was not keen on Dortmund as a base for the Regiment. The Federal Government was asked to find a suitable site a year ago and did not settle for Dortmund until much later. They have been trying to find an alternative site but so far have failed to do so.
At Napier Barracks the Regiment will take over an old airfield complete with hangars, tarmac, barracks and married quarters.
